Bonds of Eternity

Relationships are the spirit of any celebration.

In India, Rakshabandhan is celebrated with utmost devotion and pride. In my opinion, it reflects the relationship between humanity and mankind. We need to think much beyond religion, caste, class, gender, social and geographical boundaries to spread the message of integrity and encourage a harmonious social life.

To celebrate Rakshabandhan I decided to visit Anandaghar, a special institutional care where children with HIV infection are accommodated. These children have been rescued from miserable conditions by Mr. Kallol Ghosh and his team. Ghosh began his journey about 31 years ago with his set of close friends in Baranagar, Belgharia area. Instead of going to school, children living on streets in that area used to work on meagre but life threatening jobs at construction sites. Ghosh realised the urgency to take up an initiative to stop the children from losing their chances of a better future. He got books and stationeries using his pocket money to help the children read and write. Not only were these children unfortunate but also victims of the myths and misconceptions of the society. Due to lack of awareness they were stigmatized and refused vital medical support. Basic rights such as food, shelter and education were denied to them by formal schools and orphanages. Ghosh understood that it was necessary to use multifaceted approach to provide the children with a better living. He met volunteers, donors, corporate and other organizations to generate funds. After years of hard-work and struggle he managed to offer the children with an alternative home. Comprehensive educational support, excursions, healthcare, psychosocial therapy, sports and cultural activities are provided to encourage a normal healthy life. Also, art therapy techniques and exercises are practiced as a means of communication and self expression. The children also get an opportunity to participate in craft exhibition within the premises.

Ghosh and his mates are striving ceaselessly to restore these children’s faith in humanity and help them integrate in the society. Their sole aim is to enable these children to take active part in the society and illustrate that HIV is just a disease, not a taboo. They are trying to work closely with the government bodies to ensure formal education for these children. While narrating his story he unfolded several experiences. Honestly, I was deeply touched. What started with a small effort eventually led to the formation of Anandaghar a small land holding in the periphery of Kolkata. Sometimes when I sit and contemplate about their lives, I feel I always had the urge to be the rain for the buds to blossom. Hopefully their efforts will pioneer a new approach to eradicate any form of exploitation against the children. It’s fascinating how Ghosh shifted from an ordinary professional life to a challenging position. Certainly, an integral part of his life is surrounded by a bunch of dreams for the underprivileged children of our society. Many people do things simply out of the kindness in their heart without realising that they are inspiring people around them. This Rakshabandhan, I experienced an afternoon that echoed the true spirit of togetherness and joy.
