Doing Well By Doing Good!

In the eighteenth century, it was expressed that interactions between people and organisations would meet the desires and needs of the society. A concern towards mankind began that gradually developed into a social responsibility. But why would an organization want to go beyond profit making and have a social impact? Also, what might interest a professional mindset to focus on sustainability, and create a difference in the society? Well, these questions cannot be answered categorically. Today, business has emerged as one of the most powerful institutions. It’s no longer expected to play a traditional role of profit-making enterprise but also act in a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable way.

The idea is to achieve success in ways that honour ethical values and meet the expectations of the society. Organizations are making their way into the business boom and expanding by crossing geographical boundaries. It feels great to be acknowledged globally as a key player!

“With great power comes great responsibility” – the thematic and often-quoted phrase first appeared in the famous Spiderman series. This very truthful phrase holds immense significance in context to corporate social responsibility. One must know that an organization does not operate in isolation. There’s an increasing realisation that successful institutions hold a unique strength to influence society and make a great impact. Whether by incorporating exclusive business initiatives or introducing methods to enable the organization to become more engaged with societal issues, every institution needs to understand their core social purpose.

Undertaking socially responsible initiatives is about keeping transparency and honesty in actions. Else it leaves one wondering if there are strings attached, personal gains involved. Social responsibility is considered an integral part of any business foundation as it allows reaping rewards in many ways. Given sheer power, organizations can bring in people of all background and interest together and make a strong social impact. Holding values of competitiveness and profitability in order to function shouldn't detach us from the broader society.

The concept emphasises on the notion that business has a duty towards the society that needs to be fulfilled. In return, it brings in a positive image for the institution. In today's world, there are several societal wrongs that need to be corrected, environmental issues to be reduced and an overall well-being of the community to be thought of. Interestingly, this is an intense business environment within itself. Organisations need to address specific social problems, create awareness and bring about solutions, be it in the form of innovative initiatives or voluntary services. This would result in benefiting the organization by ensuring a profitable future with a sustainable value.

Social responsibility mechanism also calls out for social innovation. Creation of new strategies, plans, ideas and concepts lead to a new leadership style altogether in an organization. The concept cleverly integrates the company and the social environment. The sole motive is to realise the bigger picture of the world of business, which functions successfully only if all the required elements are well-combined. The commitment to sustainable value ensures a bright future for the generation and the organization itself.

A positive practice shall lead to commercial success and general welfare. After all, success is not only measured in monetary terms but also in terms of the impact the organization makes on the community and the environment.
